RESUMO

Soft drink consumption has become a highly controversial public health issue. Given the pattern of consumption in China, sugar-sweetened beverage is the main type of soft drink consumed. Due to containing high levels of fructose, a soft drink may have a deleterious effect on handgrip strength (HGS) due to oxidative stress, inflammation and insulin resistance. However, few studies show an association between soft drink consumption and HGS in adults. We aimed to investigate the association between soft drink consumption and longitudinal changes in HGS among a Chinese adult population. A longitudinal population-based cohort study (5-year follow-up, median: 3·66 years) was conducted in Tianjin, China. A total of 11 125 participants (56·7 % men) were enrolled. HGS was measured using a handheld digital dynamometer. Soft drink consumption (mainly sugar-containing carbonated beverages) was measured at baseline using a validated FFQ. ANCOVA was used to evaluate the association between soft drink consumption and annual change in HGS or weight-adjusted HGS. After adjusting for multiple confounding factors, the least square means (95 % CI) of annual change in HGS across soft drink consumption frequencies were -0·70 (-2·49, 1·09) for rarely drinks, -0·82 (-2·62, 0·97) for < 1 cup/week and -0·86 (-2·66, 0·93) for ≥ 1 cup/week (Pfor trend < 0·05). Likewise, a similar association was observed between soft drink consumption and annual change in weight-adjusted HGS. The results indicate that higher soft drink consumption was associated with faster HGS decline in Chinese adults.

RESUMO

Class I KNOTTED-like homeobox (KNOXI) genes are parts of the regulatory network that control the evolutionary diversification of leaf morphology. Their specific spatiotemporal expression patterns in developing leaves correlate with the degrees of leaf complexity between simple-leafed and compound-leafed species. However, KNOXI genes are not involved in compound leaf formation in several legume species. Here, we identify a pathway for dual repression of MtKNOXI function in Medicago truncatula. PINNATE-LIKE PENTAFOLIATA1 (PINNA1) represses the expression of MtKNOXI, while PINNA1 interacts with MtKNOXI and sequesters it to the cytoplasm. Further investigations reveal that UNUSUAL FLORAL ORGANS (MtUFO) is the direct target of MtKNOXI, and mediates the transition from trifoliate to pinnate-like pentafoliate leaves. These data suggest a new layer of regulation for morphological diversity in compound-leafed species, in which the conserved regulators of floral development, MtUFO, and leaf development, MtKNOXI, are involved in variation of pinnate-like compound leaves in M. truncatula.

RESUMO

Leaf traits were affected by soil factors and displayed varietal differences in forest. However, few examples have been reported on the Island ecosystems. We comprehensively investigated 9 leaf traits (leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, SLA, leaf fresh weight, leaf C content, leaf N content, leaf K content, leaf C:N ratio) of 54 main subtropical woody species and soil parameters (soil pH, total C content, total N content, total K content, available N content, available P content, available K content and soil moisture) in Neilingding Island, Shenzhen, southern China. Intra-and interspecific variation of leaf traits were measured and their correlations with soil parameters were explored. The interspecific variations of leaf C:N ratio, leaf N content and leaf fresh weight were higher than their intraspecific variations. The intraspecific variation of leaf K content was larger than that of interspecific one, accounting for 80.69% of the total variance. Positive correlations were found among intraspecific coefficients of variations in leaf morphological traits. The correlation analysis between the variation of intraspecific traits and the variation of soil parameters showed that changes in soil factors affected leaf morphology and stoichiometry. The interaction between soil moisture and soil available P content was the key factor on intraspecific variations of leaf traits including leaf area, leaf fresh weight, leaf C and leaf K content. We concluded that leaf traits of plants in the island were tightly related to soil parameters. Soil parameters, especially soil moisture and available P content, affected plant leaf morphology and stoichiometry at the local scale.

RESUMO

Deficits in executive control of attention have been reported in schizophrenia patients, but can be ameliorated by treatment of atypical antipsychotics along with the symptoms. However, it remains unclear whether this effect is related to a modulation of hemispheric asymmetry in executive control by the medicine. In this behavioral study, we employed a lateralized version of the attention network test to examine the hemispheric asymmetry of executive control in schizophrenia patients before and after olanzapine treatment, compared to matched healthy controls. Executive control was measured as a conflict effect, indexed as the response time (RT) difference between incongruent versus congruent flanker conditions, and was compared between stimuli presented in the left and the right visual field (i.e., processed by right versus left hemisphere of the brain). Results showed that pre-treatment schizophrenia patients revealed a right hemisphere superiority in conflict effect (i.e., a smaller effect in the right hemisphere than in the left hemisphere), driven by the incongruent condition. Olanzapine treatment reduced this right hemisphere superiority by improving the efficiency of the left hemisphere in the incongruent condition. These results suggested that olanzapine treatment may improve the efficiency of executive control in the left hemisphere in schizophrenia patients.

RESUMO

We combine on-the-fly trajectory surface hopping simulations and the doorway-window representation of nonlinear optical response functions to create an efficient protocol for the evaluation of time- and frequency-resolved fluorescence (TFRF) spectra and anisotropies of the realistic polyatomic systems. This approach gives the effective description of the proper (e.g., experimental) pulse envelopes, laser field polarizations, and the proper orientational averaging of TFRF signals directly from the well-established on-the-fly nonadiabatic dynamic simulations without extra computational cost. To discuss the implementation details of the developed protocol, we chose cis-azobenzene as a prototype to simulate the time evolution of the TFRF spectra governed by its nonadiabatic dynamics. The results show that the TFRF is determined by the interplay of several key factors, i.e., decays of excited-state populations, evolution of the transition dipole moments along with the dynamic propagation, and scaling factor of the TFRF signals associated with the cube of emission frequency. This work not only provides an efficient and effective approach to simulate the TFRF and anisotropies of realistic polyatomic systems but also discusses the important relationship between the TFRF signals and the underlining nonadiabatic dynamics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The development of short popular science video platforms helps people obtain health information, but no research has evaluated the information characteristics and quality of short videos related to cervical cancer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality and reliability of short cervical cancer-related videos on TikTok and Kwai. METHODS: The Chinese keyword "cervical cancer" was used to search for related videos on TikTok and Kwai, and a total of 163 videos were ultimately included. The overall quality of these videos was evaluated by the Global Quality Score (GQS) and the modified DISCERN tool. RESULTS: A total of 163 videos were included in this study, TikTok and Kwai contributed 82 and 81 videos, respectively. Overall, these videos received much attention; the median number of likes received was 1360 (403-6867), the median number of comments was 147 (40-601), and the median number of collections was 282 (71-1296). In terms of video content, the etiology of cervical cancer was the most frequently discussed topic. Short videos posted on TikTok received more attention than did those posted on Kwai, and the GQS and DISCERN score of videos posted on TikTok were significantly better than those of videos posted on Kwai. In addition, the videos posted by specialists were of the highest quality, with a GQS and DISCERN score of 3 (2-3) and 2 (2-3), respectively. Correlation analysis showed that GQS was significantly correlated with the modified DISCERN scores (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the quality and reliability of cervical cancer-related health information provided by short videos were unsatisfactory, and the quality of the videos posted on TikTok was better than that of videos posted on Kwai. Compared with those posted by individual users, short videos posted by specialists provided higher-quality health information.

RESUMO

Large quantities of greenhouse gases (GHGs) are emitted into the atmosphere during wastewater treatment. In this study, GHG and microbial samples were collected from four wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and their differences and relationships were assessed. The study showed that, compared with conventionally constructed WWTPs, well-established gas collection systems in underground WWTPs facilitate comprehensive collection and accurate accounting of GHGs. In aboveground WWTPs, capped anoxic ponds promote methane production releasing it at 2-8 times the rate of uncapped emissions, in contrast to nitrous oxide emissions. Moreover, a stable subsurface environment allows for smaller fluctuations in daily GHG emissions and higher microbial diversity and abundance. This study highlights differences in GHG emission fluxes and microbial communities in differently constructed WWTPs, which are useful for control and accurate accounting of GHG emissions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The present evidence is deficient for the trade-offs between the pros and cons of single blastocyst transfer (SBT) versus double blastocyst transfer (DBT) in frozen-thawed embryo transfer cycles for women in advanced reproductive age, especially in the second cycle. The current study aimed to investigate the impact of transferred blastocyst numbers on pregnancy outcomes in the first and second embryo transfer for women ≥ 35 years. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study including 1284 frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer (FBT) cycles from two reproductive centers. We analyzed the pregnancy outcomes after SBT and DBT in the first and second FBT cycles. Moreover, stratified analysis was conducted by maternal age. RESULTS: In the first FBT cycle, the LBR was higher in the DBT group than that in the SBT group [52.3% vs. 33.9%; adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 1.65; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.26-2.15, P < 0.001]. However, the LBR of the DBT group showed no remarkable difference compared with that of the SBT group in the second cycle of FBT (44.3% vs. 33.3%; aOR, 1.30; 95% CI, 0.81-2.08; P = 0.271). Furthermore, stratified analysis by age showed a higher LBR for the DBT group than the SBT group in patients aged 38-42 years (43.1% vs. 33.9%; aOR, 2.27; 95% CI, 1.05-4.90; P = 0.036). CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrated that the SBT regimen is a better choice for both, the first and second frozen-thawed embryo transfer cycles, for women aged 35-37 years. Additionally, the DBT regimen is still recommended to achieve a high LBR in women aged 38-42 years in the second FBT cycle. These findings may be beneficial for deciding the embryo transfer regimens in women of advanced reproductive age.

RESUMO

Background: China has experienced a COVID-19 wave caused by Omicron XBB variant starting in April 2023. Our aim is to conduct a retrospective analysis exploring the dynamics of the outbreak under counterfactual scenarios that combine the use of vaccines, antiviral drugs, and nonpharmaceutical interventions. Methods: We developed a mathematical model of XBB transmission in China, which has been calibrated using SARS-CoV-2 positive rates per week. Intrinsic age-specific infection-hospitalization risk, infection-ICU risk, and infection-fatality risk were used to estimate disease burdens, characterized as number of hospital admissions, ICU admissions, and deaths. Results: We estimated that in absence of behavioral change, the XBB outbreak in spring 2023 would have resulted in 0.86 billion infections (∼61% of the total population). Our counterfactual analysis shows that the synergetic effect of vaccination (70% vaccination coverage), antiviral treatment (20% receiving antiviral treatment), and moderate nonpharmaceutical interventions (20% isolation and L1 PHSMs) could reduce the number of deaths to levels close to seasonal influenza (1.17 vs. 0.65 per 10,000 individuals and 5.85 vs. 3.85 per 10,000 individuals aged 60+, respectively). The maximum peak prevalence of hospital and ICU admissions are estimated to be lower than the corresponding capacities (8.6 vs. 10.4 per 10,000 individuals and 1.2 vs. 2.1 per 10,000 individuals, respectively). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the capacity of the Chinese healthcare system was adequate to face the Omicron XBB wave in spring 2023 but, at the same time, supports the importance of administering highly effective vaccine with long-lasting immune response, and the use of antiviral treatments.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: A variety of unhealthy sleep behaviors have been shown to be associated with an increased risk of urologic cancers. However, little is known about the association between the overall sleep patterns and urologic cancers. To prospectively investigate the associations between a healthy sleep pattern and the risks of urologic cancers, including bladder cancer (BCa) and renal cell carcinoma (RCC). METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 377,144 participants free of cancer at baseline were recruited from the UK Biobank. Data on sleep behaviors were collected through questionnaires at recruitment. The incident urologic cancer cases were determined through linkage to national cancer and death registries. We established a healthy sleep score according to five sleep traits (sleep duration, chronotype, insomnia, snoring, and daytime sleepiness). Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to calculate the adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals to assess the relationship between the healthy sleep score and the risk of urologic cancers. RESULTS: During a median of ≥9 years of follow-up, we identified 1986 incident urologic cancer cases, including 1272 BCa cases and 706 RCC cases. Compared with the participants with a poor sleep pattern (score of 0-2), the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio and 95% confidence interval were 0.85 (0.75 to 0.96) for urologic cancers, 0.80 (0.68 to 0.93) for BCa, and 0.91 (0.74, 1.12) for RCC, respectively, for those with the healthier sleep pattern (score of 4-5). CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that a healthy sleep pattern is associated with lower risks of urologic cancers.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of ratio of serum luteinizing hormone (LH) on gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist (GnRH-ant) day to basal LH (hLH/bLH) on in-vitro fertilization or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) outcome in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) women who received GnRH-ant protocol for controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH). METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in women with PCOS (n = 1116) who underwent the GnRH-ant protocol for COH between 2015 and 2022 and were stratified as group A (hLH/bLH < 1, n = 489) and group B (hLH/bLH ≥ 1, n = 627) according to the variation of serum LH. The outcomes of COH and the first frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycle were compared between group A, B and the linear relationship between hLH/bLH ratio and IVF/ICSI outcomes were studied by multivariate linear regression analysis and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models. RESULTS: There were significant differences in baseline characteristics and outcomes between group A and B. Group A had higher levels of bLH, AMH, estradiol (E2) on GnRH-ant start day and lower levels of LH on GnRH-ant start day. Group B has better ovulation induction outcomes: more retrieved oocytes, normally fertilized oocytes (2PN), cleavage embryos, available embryos and high-quality blastocysts. Multivariate linear regression analysis found no statistically significant connection between hLH/bLH and clinical outcomes. RCS models showed hLH/bLH had nonlinear association with outcomes, including number of oocytes retrieved, 2PN, available embryos, incidence of OHSS, chemical pregnancy, clinical pregnancy, abortion and live birth. CONCLUSIONS: hLH/bLH ratio could be a more forward-looking indicator of clinical outcome in women with PCOS undergoing GnRH-ant protocols than LH on trigger day and the ratio of LH level on trigger day to basal LH. hLH/bLH = 1 may be the best condition for higher live birth rate and lower OHSS rate.

RESUMO

Objective: Previous studies have shown that oxymatrine (OMT) can improve high-fat-high-fructose-diet-induced non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and our study aimed to explore its possible metabolic potential mechanisms. Methods: Wistar rats were fed a high-fat-high-fructose diet for 8 weeks and treated with oxymatrine by gavage for the last 4 weeks. We measured biochemical indicators and pathological changes in each group and used liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to analyze changes in metabolites in the serum and liver of the rats. Results: The results showed that OMT can alleviate the high-fat-high-fructose-induced weight gain and hepatic lipid deposition in rats. Metabolomic analysis showed that the level of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) was downregulated and levels of desmosterol and d-galactose were upregulated in livers fed with HFDHFr. The levels of L-isoleucine, L-valine, arachidonic acid (AA), taurocholic acid (TCA), chenodeoxycholyltaurine (TDCA), isocitrate, and glutathione (GSH) were downregulated in the liver, whereas those of linoleic acid (LA), phosphocholine (PC), glycerophosphocholine (GPC), and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) were upregulated in the serum treated with OMT. Conclusion: In summary, OMT can improve HFDHFr-induced NAFLD, and metabolomic analysis can provide an early warning for the development of NAFLD as well as provide a rationale for therapeutic targets.

RESUMO

PSEUDO-RESPONSE REGULATORs (PRRs) play key roles in the circadian rhythms and flowering in plants. Here, we identified the four members of the PRR family in Medicago truncatula, including MtPRR9a, MtPRR9b, MtPRR7 and MtPRR5, and isolated their Tnt1 retrotransposon-tagged mutants. They were expressed in different organs and were nuclear-localized. The four MtPRRs genes played important roles in normal clock rhythmicity maintenance by negatively regulating the expression of MtGI and MtLHY. Surprisingly, the four MtPRRs functioned redundantly in regulating flowering time under long-day conditions, and the quadruple mutant flowered earlier. Moreover, MtPRR can recruit the MtTPL/MtTPR corepressors and the other MtPRRs to form heterodimers to constitute the core mechanism of the circadian oscillator.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: As a novel prognostic and inflammatory marker, the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) has come to the foreground in recent years. SII may be used as an indicator reflecting the progressive inflammatory process in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between SII and assisted reproductive outcomes in PCOS patients. RESULTS: A total of 966 women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure with PCOS were included in the study. The SII was calculated as platelet count (/L) × neutrophil count (/L)/lymphocyte count (/L). Participants were divided into four groups according to SII quartiles calculated at baseline, and the differences of clinical and laboratory outcomes between these four groups were compared. Moreover, a univariate linear regression model was used to evaluate the associations between SII and the outcomes. Patients in the highest SII quartile (Q4) had lower antral follicle count (AFC), estradiol (E2), and progesterone (P) levels on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) start compared with the lower three SII quartiles (Q1-Q3). Moreover, our analysis demonstrated that women in the lower SII quartiles had a higher rate of available embryos and blastocyst formation compared with those in the highest SII quartile. Logarithm of SII correlated negatively with available embryo rate, but not with number of available embryos. Additionally, the results of our multivariate logistic regression analyses indicated that the highest SII quartile was negatively associated with biochemical pregnancy rate (BPR), clinical pregnancy rate (CPR), live birth rate (LBR), and implantation rate (IR). A non-linear relationship between the SII and number of available embryos, with a negative relationship seen to the right of the inflection point was also found. CONCLUSIONS: The interplay among thrombocytosis, inflammation, and immunity could influence assisted reproductive outcomes in PCOS patients. In this regard, SII may serve as a valuable marker for exploring potential correlations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Stomach cancer incidence presents significant racial/ethnic disparities among racial/ethnic minority groups in the United States, particularly among Asian and Hispanic immigrant populations. However, population-based evaluation of disparities by nativity has been scarce because of the lack of nativity-specific population denominators, especially for disaggregated Asian subgroups. Population-based stomach cancer incidence and tumor characteristics by detailed race/ethnicity and nativity were examined. METHODS: Annual age-adjusted incidence rates were calculated by race/ethnicity, sex, and nativity and tumor characteristics, such as stage and anatomic subsite, were evaluated using the 2011-2015 California Cancer Registry data. For Hispanic and Asian populations, nativity-specific population counts were estimated using the US Census and the American Community Survey Public Use Microdata Sample data. RESULTS: During 2011-2015 in California, 14,198 patients were diagnosed with stomach cancer. Annual age-adjusted incidence rates were higher among foreign-born individuals than their US-born counterparts. The difference was modest among Hispanics (∼1.3-fold) but larger (∼2- to 3-fold) among Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Americans. The highest incidence was observed for foreign-born Korean and Japanese Americans (33 and 33 per 100,000 for men; 15 and 12 per 100,000 for women, respectively). The proportion of localized stage disease was highest among foreign-born Korean Americans (44%); a similar proportion was observed among US-born Korean Americans, although numbers were limited. For other Asians and Hispanics, the localized stage proportion was generally lower among foreign-born than US-born individuals and lowest among foreign-born Japanese Americans (23%). CONCLUSIONS: Nativity-specific investigation with disaggregated racial/ethnic groups identified substantial stomach cancer disparities among foreign-born immigrant populations.

RESUMO

Introduction: Island ecosystems often have a disproportionate number of endemic species and unique and fragile functional characteristics. However, few examples of this type of ecosystem have been reported. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive field study on Neilingding Island, southern China. The leaf samples of 79 subtropical forest tree species were obtained and their functional traits were studied in the dry and wet seasons to explain the relationships between plant functional traits and soil nutrients. Results: We found a greater availability of soil moisture content (SMC) and nutrients in the wet season than in the dry season. The values of wet season soil available phosphorus (5.97 mg·kg-1), SMC (17.67%), and soil available potassium (SAK, 266.96 mg·kg-1) were significantly higher than those of the dry season. The leaf dry matter content, specific leaf weight, leaf density, leaf total carbon, leaf total nitrogen, leaf total calcium, and the N/P and C/P ratios of leaves were all significantly higher in the dry season than in the wet season, being 18.06%, 12.90%, 12.00%, 0.17%, 3.41%, 9.02%, 26.80%, and 24.14% higher, respectively. In contrast, the leaf area (51.01 cm2), specific leaf area (152.76 cm2·g-1), leaf water content (0.59%), leaf total nitrogen (1.31%), leaf total phosphorus (0.14%), and leaf total magnesium (0.33%) were much lower in the dry season than in the wet one. There were significant pairwise correlations between leaf functional traits, but the number and strength of correlations were significantly different in the dry and wet seasons. The SAK, soil total phosphorus (STP), and pH impacted plant leaf functional traits in the dry season, whereas in the wet season, they were affected by SAK, STP, pH, and NO3- (nitrate). Discussion: Both soil nutrients and water availability varied seasonally and could cause variation in a number of leaf traits.

RESUMO

Diabetes mellitus (DM) significantly influences the normal health of patients with its severe complications, including diabetes-related cognitive impairment (CI). Recently, neuroinflammation and oxidative stress (OS) have been reported to participate in the pathogenesis of diabetes-related CI. Teneligliptin, an inhibitor of DDP-IV, was developed for treating DM and is claimed with promising effects against inflammation. Herein, in the current study, we examined the potential therapeutic function of Teneligliptin against diabetes-related CI. Db/m or diabetic mice were orally administered with teneligliptin (60 mg/kg/day) for 10 weeks. Elevated levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), increased escape latency, declined time in the platform quadrant and decreased number of platform crossings in the Morris water maze test, reduced freezing index in the fear conditioning test, and lessened time spent in the novel arm and percentage of alterations in the Y-maze test were observed in diabetic mice, all of which were sharply improved by teneligliptin. Furthermore, increased levels of inflammatory cytokines and activated OS state were observed in the hippocampus of diabetic mice, which were markedly repressed by Teneligliptin. Lastly, the activation of the NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) signaling and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress pathway in the hippocampus of diabetic mice were notably inhibited by teneligliptin. Collectively, teneligliptin mitigated diabetes-related CI by repressing the ER stress and NLRP3 inflammasome in diabetic mice.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: MicroRNA-223 (miR-223) has emerged as a promising noninvasive biomarker for Crohn's disease (CD). However, it is unclear which tissue derived miRNA-223 can more accurately estimate CD disease activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To collect serum, terminal ileal mucosa biopsy and fecal samples from CD patients and healthy controls. The CD Activity Index (CDAI) score, Montreal classification, maintenance medicines, peripheral blood inflammatory markers, fecal calprotectin (FC) and the Simple Endoscopic Score for CD (SES-CD) were recorded. To compare the expression of miR-223 in the serum, intestinal tissue, and feces. RESULTS: MiR-223 expression levels in the serum, intestinal tissue and feces of CD patients were significantly higher than those of controls. The level of miR-223 in the serum, intestinal tissue and feces increased significantly in active CD patients compared with that in inactive CD patients. The levels of serum, intestinal tissue and fecal miR-223 were correlated with the CDAI. Serum miR-223 was also correlated with C-reactive protein (CRP) and IL-6, tissue miR-223 correlated with IL-6 and FC, and fecal miR-223 correlated with FC. In terms of the association with FC, fecal miR-223 had a higher Spearman r value than tissue miR-223. The area under the curve (AUC) values of serum, tissue and fecal miR-223 to diagnose CD were similar to those of CRP and FC (AUC > 0.8). The AUC values of tissue and fecal miR-223 to evaluate CD disease activity were 0.832 and 0.818, respectively, and were higher than serum miR-223, CRP and FC. Fecal miR-223 had a higher specificity of 92.3%. CONCLUSIONS: Fecal miR-223 might be a novel, noninvasive biomarker for estimating the disease activity of CD patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer in California and second among Hispanic/Latinx (H/L) males. Data from the California Cancer Registry were utilized to investigate the differential impact on CRC outcomes from demographic and clinical characteristics among non-Hispanic white (NHW), non-Hispanic Black (NHB), U.S. born (USB), and non-U.S. born (NUSB) H/L patients diagnosed during 1995-2020. METHODS: We identified 248,238 NHW, 28,433 NHB, and 62,747 H/L cases (32,402 NUSB and 30,345 USB). Disparities across groups were evaluated through case frequencies, odds ratios (OR) from logistic regression, and hazard ratios (HR) from Cox regression models. All statistical tests were two-sided. RESULTS: NHB patients showed a higher proportion of colon tumors (75.8%) than NHW (71.5%), whereas both NUSB (65.9%) and USB (66.9%) H/L cases had less (p < 0.001). In multivariate models, NUSB H/L cases were 15% more likely than NHW to have rectal cancer. Compared to NHW, NHB cases had the greatest proportion of Stage IV diagnoses (26.0%) and were more likely to die of CRC (multivariate HR = 1.12; 95% CI = 1.10-1.15). Instead, NUSB H/L patients were less likely to die of CRC (multivariate HR = 0.87; 95% CI = 0.85-0.89) whereas USB H/L did not differ from NHW. CONCLUSIONS: NHB and H/L cases have more adverse characteristics at diagnosis compared to NHW cases, with NHB cases being more likely to die from CRC. However, NUSB H/Ls cases showed better survival than NHW and US born H/L patients. These findings highlight the importance of considering nativity among H/L populations to understand cancer disparities.
